The Russo-Persian War of 1826-1828 was the last time that Iran started a war. Since 1826, Iran has been invaded by groups such as the Allied Forces in World War II and Iraq in 1980, but we have not initiated a war. In Iran’s long history, we have fought many wars with great empires, including the Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, Mughals, Portuguese, etc., but none of them come close to the impact of the Russo-Persian wars. The first Russo-Persian war started as a border dispute between the Qajar Empire of Persia and the Russian Empire. The Russians wanted to have access to open oceans and the Caucasus. This resulted in many wars and treaties between the Russian Empire and Iran. Iran lost most of her central Asian lands as a result of the Golestan Treaty, which was negotiated in 1813, and all her Eastern European lands in the Turkmanchay Treaty, signed in 1828. Iran lost Armenia, Georgia, Daghestan, Azerbaijan, parts of modern day Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan to the Russians. The Turkmanchay Treaty is considered a disaster in Iranian history, and it resulted in very violent acts by an angry mob that attacked the people in the Russian embassy in Tehran and killed the people in the embassy. After 200 years, the impact of the Russo-Persian wars is still visible. After the Russians defeated the Persian army, they achieved a great influence over Iran; their influence was both good and bad. A Russian colonel named Vladimir Liakhov, commander of the Persian Cossack Brigade, shelled the Iranian parliament and helped the Iran dictator and executed many Iranian constitution fighters.  The Russo-Persian wars’ impact was felt more after the break-up of the Soviet Union, seen in the problem of sharing the Caspian sea, the new-born “Republic of Azerbaijan”, which stole the name of the Iranian province of Azerbaijan. The impact of the Russo-Persian wars can only be compared with the Arab conquest of Persia in its significance.
